Musicians and Visual Artists Join Forces in the Medical Community

The ECMA award-winning Saint John String Quartet in partnership with Peter Buckland Gallery is launching a two-part program to raise awareness for the arts titled, Music for Art's Sake, combining the work of five visual artists and five musicians. This project brings together the artistic community and the medical community. Music For Art's Sake is a potential catalyst for examining ways in which the arts community can forge partnerships with the healing community.

Part one, Artists at Work takes place May 3-7, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (May 5 11am to 1:30pm) at the Saint John Regional Hospital's Light Court. The five visual artists - Peggy Smith, James Wilson, Toby Graser, Paul Mathieson and Richard Flynn - with five musicians - David Adams, Geneviève Beaudry, Christopher Buckley, Sonja Adams and Jacques Dupriez - will create and perform on site. The five artists will use the musicians as subjects or inspiration while the quartet rehearses in the Light Court. The program is intended to increase awareness for the arts by connecting interdisciplinary artistic endeavors in an unconventional site. The hospital population and the general public are invited to watch and listen as the creations develop.

Part two, The Unveiling is a concert and an auction taking place at the Saint John Arts Centre May 12 at 7:30 p.m. The elegant evening will be lead by Bernard Cormier with a performance by the Saint John String Quartet and French musician, Jacques Dupriez of the Brahms Quintet Op 115. Mr. Dupriez will perform on a rediscovered, barytone violin of the Romantic era, which he has championed. And a showing and sale of the five unique works of art, auctioned off by Tim Isaac.

Tickets ($20) can be purchased at Peter Buckland Gallery or the Saint John Arts Centre.
